Statistics
of the Austrian Central Statistics Office shows how many people actually a visual impairment have.

7800 Austrians are practically blind, 4,600 are full of blind
7800 people identified themselves as practically blind, therefore, to 0.1 percent of the total population. 4600 Austrians are totally blind in both eyes, about a sixth of them since birth.
More than virtually every other blind people are affected by the deterioration over time or illness was caused. One in four in a Eye was blinded as to cause an accident.
Of the 7800 people were practically blind retired 5300, 800 employed, 700 students or students. 55.5% of the blind were virtually at least 70 years old. About one third of the almost blind, the most severe visual impairment began at an age of more than 60 years.

3.087 million persons have at least one visual impairment on. Of these, 86.6%, that the effect could be glasses, contact lenses or surgically corrected. Myopia in the range of issues makes up the largest proportion of visual impairment.

Significant increases compared to 1986 occurred in long-distance and presbyopia on (+110,000, 1.5 million, 21% of the population) (+46,000 affected, 144.000, 2% of the population), but also for cataracts and myopia (+41,000, 1, 2 million, 18%). Slightly more than three-quarters of cataracts entfallen auf den Grauen Star.
40 % aller Sehbeeinträchigten sind 70 Jahre und älter
12 % sind jünger als 30 Jahre. Nahezu jeder Dritte mit Sehproblemen ist zwischen 50 und 69 Jahre alt.
Beinahe drei Viertel der an Star Erkrankten sind mindestens 70 Jahre. 85 % der an Grauem Star Leidenden, 70 % der Alterssichtigen und 60 % der an Grünem Star Erkrankten sind Pensionisten. Ein Viertel der Sehbeeinträchtigten, denen nicht durch Brillen etc. geholfen werden kann, sind erwerbstätig.
